Aargau: eight-year leases, and the hunting society is an association
The canton tenders the territories publicly and leases them for eight years to hunting societies formed as associations.
In Aargau the hunting territories are publicly tendered by the canton and leased for eight years to hunting societies. The decision on which society gets a territory requires the consent of the municipalities concerned. As a rule the territory is re-leased to the outgoing society; where two or more apply, preference goes to the one that better guarantees the hunting duties will be met, judged notably on past practice, attachment to the territory and age structure. A hunting society is defined as an association of licence holders in the legal form of a Verein. Its members must hold the Aargau hunting pass throughout the lease period, and they are jointly and unlimitedly liable for the obligations arising from the lease and from cantonal hunting law. Subletting is not permitted. The lease payment accrues to the canton: the government sets the annual income at the start of each lease period, and the department fixes, on the hunting commission's proposal, the payment for each territory, based on the huntable area and the character of the territory.
