St Gallen: the regale passed on by lease

The canton holds the regale and passes the right to hunt on by lease; territories are as a rule 500 to 2000 hectares.

The St Gallen hunting act (Jagdgesetz, sGS 853.1) of 17 November 1994 states in article 2 that the hunting regale belongs to the canton, and that for huntable animals the canton passes the right to hunt on by lease. The competent cantonal office designates, after hearing the political municipality, the areas where hunting is open and those where it is not, then divides the hunting area into territories. These are drawn within the municipal area where natural conditions allow, and cover as a rule 500 to 2000 hectares. The act then governs the hunting society and the management community, the lease payment, habitat and biological communities, hunting planning and operation, game damage and supervision. In it the canton also commits to the initial and continuing training of hunters and of the supervisory bodies.
