Permits

Four licence types, application by 10 April

The hunting year runs from 1 April to 31 March; licence applications are due by 10 April.

The canton offers four categories: high-hunt licences for chamois and red deer; low-hunt licences for roe deer, fox, badger and similar species; guest authorisations; and special authorisations, for example for predator hunting. The administrative calendar is as binding as the hunting one. The hunting year runs from 1 April to 31 March. Applications for high- and low-hunt licences must be filed by 10 April with the Amt für Raum und Wald, Kasernenstrasse 17a, 9102 Herisau. Guest authorisations follow a different rule: applications go to the hunting administrator four days before the intended hunting date. The administration also publishes its annual reports, which makes it possible to follow how the bag develops from season to season.

Regulations

Appenzell Ausserrhoden: cantonal regale and six conditions

The canton holds the regale; the right to hunt requires, among other things, active membership of a recognised hunting organisation.

Within federal law, the hunting regale and the right of disposal over wild mammals and birds belong to the canton. The canton regulates and plans hunting and ensures appropriate use of game populations, taking account of the interests of the forest, of nature and animal protection and of agriculture. The canton publishes six conditions for the right to hunt in Appenzell Ausserrhoden: legal capacity; Swiss citizenship or a settlement permit; residence in Switzerland, guests excepted; a recognised aptitude certificate; active membership of a recognised hunting organisation; and assurance of ethically correct conduct. The three middle conditions are rarely found elsewhere in this form: they concern residence status, domicile and membership of an organisation, not merely the applicant's technical competence.
