Permits

The Jura permit: four things to show, one of them a day’s work

Jura aptitude certificate, age 18, a day’s work on natural heritage, and the latest periodic shooting test passed.

Anyone wishing to hunt in Jura must hold a permit. The hunting permit is issued by the environment office to a person who shows, among other things: that they hold the Jura hunting aptitude certificate; that they have reached the age of eighteen; that they have completed a day's work in the field of natural heritage; and that they have passed the latest periodic shooting test. The third condition is worth noting: it demands an actual contribution to caring for natural heritage, not merely a skill or a fee. The first points back to the Jura certificate: training for candidate hunters runs over two years, and since 2004 its organisation has been entrusted to the cantonal hunters' federation. Permit types and fees are set by the regulation on the practice of hunting. The office may also issue temporary hunting permits to hunters' guests or to candidate hunters; the applicant must then hold an aptitude certificate from another canton or state or, for Jura candidates, have passed the theoretical and practical firearms exams.

Regulations

Jura: the environment office implements hunting law

The ENV is the office charged with applying federal and cantonal hunting law, and provides hunting policing and supervision.

In the canton of Jura it is the Office de l'environnement (ENV), within the environment and culture department, that is charged with applying federal and cantonal hunting law and that provides hunting policing and supervision. The office handles the subject in several distinct strands, each published separately: the practice of hunting and training, game and protected species, damage prevention and compensation, road traffic and wildlife, and climbing activities — the last a reminder that protecting wildlife is not only a matter for the hunting season. The cantonal texts appear in the Jura systematic collection of laws: the ordinance on hunting and the protection of wild fauna, the ordinance on granting the temporary hunting permit, and the regulation on the practice of hunting, which sets the types of permit issued and the fees in force.
