The aptitude certificate: registration from 15 September to 31 December

Exam registration opens online only, from 15 September to 31 December each year.

The Ufficio della caccia e della pesca states that registration for the hunting aptitude exams in Ticino is online only: the form opens on 15 September and closes on 31 December each year. Miss that window and you wait a year. Training of candidates is entrusted to the Federazione Cacciatori Ticinesi (FCTI), which publishes each year the detailed course programme — the course is held online — together with the dates of the compulsory training days every candidate must attend. On top come practical work and habitat maintenance days organised by the hunting societies; registration is compulsory and made in advance with the day's organiser. The programme appears each year by mid-February, but some dates are not final and days may be cancelled for bad weather: checking is the candidate's responsibility. The framework is set by the regulation on obtaining the hunting aptitude certificate of 13 January 1993.

Seasons

High hunt in September, low hunt five days a week

The canton publishes its dates three seasons ahead; the low hunt has its own days and hours, which change on 31 October.

The high hunt normally runs in September, in two blocks. The canton publishes the dates several years ahead: in 2026 from 5 to 19 September and from 23 to 27 September; in 2027 from 4 to 18 September and from 22 to 26 September. The species open then are red deer, roe deer, chamois, wild boar, marmot, fox and badger. The low hunt is authorised from 16 October to 30 November, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. On opening day every huntable species is open; on the closing day, hunting the brown hare is forbidden. The hours change mid-season: from 16 to 30 October, 08:00 to 18:30; from 31 October to 30 November, 07:30 to 16:30. Low-hunt species include fox, beech marten, badger, brown hare, mountain hare and rabbit, plus several birds among them black grouse, pheasant, woodcock and wood pigeon.

Regulations

Ticino: a hunting regulation refreshed every August

The 1990 act and the 2006 implementing regulation frame hunting; the hunting regulation is updated every year in August.

Ticino's foundation rests on two cantonal texts: the act on hunting and the protection of wild mammals and birds of 11 December 1990, and its implementing regulation of 11 July 2006 (RALCC). Three more specific regulations sit alongside: on obtaining the hunting aptitude certificate (13 January 1993), on selective ibex hunting (25 October 2017), and on the periodic shooting-accuracy test for hunters (12 December 2018). The Ticinese peculiarity is the rhythm: the hunting period is set by the hunting regulation, updated every year in August. Each season the canton publishes its “Disposizioni stagione venatoria” and a year-on-year comparison of the RALCC, so that the changes stay legible. The canton distinguishes several hunts: caccia alta, caccia bassa, ibex hunting, late-autumn hunting, winter wild boar hunting and water hunting. An executive decree also sets the hunting reserves (bandite), in the version in force for the 2021-2026 period.
