Safety rules set by each canton
The federal framework sets general principles; safety distances, shooting discipline and drive hunts remain cantonal directives.
Hunting safety is mainly a cantonal responsibility: cantons define the behavioural rules in the field, including visible clothing, safety distances, shooting discipline and signalling during drive hunts. The federal framework set by the Federal Act on Hunting (LChP/JSG) and its ordinance (OChP/JSV) sets the general principles for protecting people and non-targeted wildlife, which cantons then adapt to their own practice, whether licence-based or leasehold. A hunter must systematically check the cantonal directives in force before each outing: authorised days and hours, use of illuminated or night equipment, dog handling, and the procedure for tracking a wounded animal. Generic recommendations never replace the cantonal regulation applicable to the hunting location.
