Lithuania: a thousand contiguous hectares per hunting unit
A hunting area unit must cover at least 1,000 contiguous hectares, apart from scientific and fish-pond exceptions.
Lithuania's hunting act (no. IX-966 of 20 June 2002) is aimed at establishing the social relations connected with protecting the huntable fauna found on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania and using it rationally. Article 8 sets the management unit. Hunting area units are formed and their boundaries changed on hunting-planning principles, ensuring rational management of huntable animal populations, their proper protection, orderly and safe hunting, and avoiding significant damage by animals to objects of human economic activity. The area rule is numerical: a hunting area unit must comprise at least 1,000 hectares of contiguous hunting area. Only two exceptions are provided: smaller units may be formed on the environment ministry's proposal for scientific and educational purposes, or on the agriculture ministry's proposal within fish-pond territories. The environment ministry approves the criteria of contiguity and the requirements for the units' boundaries.
