Appenzell Innerrhoden: a licence-based hunting administration

The administration ensures appropriate use of wildlife; licences are issued by the building and environment department.

The Appenzell Innerrhoden hunting administration ensures appropriate use of native wild mammals and birds. It is responsible for conserving species diversity, protecting threatened species, protecting, conserving and maintaining wildlife habitats, and ensuring that game damage does not exceed a bearable level. Hunting licences are issued at the Bau- und Umweltdepartement, Gaiserstrasse 8 in Appenzell: the canton, one of Switzerland's smallest, concentrates the process at a single counter. The cantonal framework includes the ordinance to the hunting act (Verordnung zum Jagdgesetz, JaV, GS 922.010) of 13 June 1989. Fixed penalties for infringements of it appear under item 4 of annex 1 to the fixed-penalties ordinance (VOB, GS 311.010). The canton also publishes a forest-and-red-deer concept and measures plan, and a government decision on regulating ibex.
