The hunting supervision and its nine duties
Wardens check the right to hunt, firearms, dogs, close seasons and compliance with the leash requirement.
The Basel ordinance sets out the duties of the hunting wardens, who supervise their territory. Their tasks include: checking the right to hunt; overseeing hunting operations and ethically correct hunting; monitoring compliance with the close seasons of huntable species; checking the firearms used and the dogs admitted to the hunt; watching the territory against disturbance from excessive recreational use and from straying dogs and cats; checking compliance with the leash requirement; despatching sick or injured game with a finishing shot; recovering animals found dead; and verifying damage-prevention measures and pasture fences. The wardens must ban from the hunt any dog that does not meet the required conditions, and they are obliged to report to the specialist office, without delay, any breach of wildlife and hunting law that comes to their knowledge. The role itself is bounded: it may be exercised by someone entitled to hunt in the canton, able to reach the territory within a useful time, entitled to hunt for at least three years, and physically capable of the work.
