Graubünden: licence hunting, four forms of hunt

The cantonal hunting act grants the right to hunt under the licence system and distinguishes four forms of hunting.

Hunting in Graubünden rests on the cantonal hunting act (Kantonales Jagdgesetz, KJG, BR 740.000) of 4 June 1989, accepted by popular vote on 4 June 1989 and revised several times since. Its first article states that the hunting regale belongs to the canton, which regulates and plans hunting. Article 3 sets the regime in one sentence: the right to hunt is granted under the licence system. There are therefore no territories leased to hunting societies as in the lowland cantons: the hunter buys a licence valid, in principle, across the whole canton. Article 4 distinguishes four forms of hunting: the Hochjagd (high hunt), the Steinwildjagd (ibex hunt), the Niederjagd (low hunt) and the Passjagd (pass hunt). A hunter may practise only one form at a time, and the licence is personal and non-transferable.
