The Jura permit: four things to show, one of them a day’s work

Anyone wishing to hunt in Jura must hold a permit. The hunting permit is issued by the environment office to a person who shows, among other things: that they hold the Jura hunting aptitude certificate; that they have reached the age of eighteen; that they have completed a day's work in the field of natural heritage; and that they have passed the latest periodic shooting test. The third condition is worth noting: it demands an actual contribution to caring for natural heritage, not merely a skill or a fee. The first points back to the Jura certificate: training for candidate hunters runs over two years, and since 2004 its organisation has been entrusted to the cantonal hunters' federation. Permit types and fees are set by the regulation on the practice of hunting. The office may also issue temporary hunting permits to hunters' guests or to candidate hunters; the applicant must then hold an aptitude certificate from another canton or state or, for Jura candidates, have passed the theoretical and practical firearms exams.
