Nidwalden: cantonal regale and annual quotas
The canton holds the regale and plans the hunt; the government sets the annual quotas.
Nidwalden's cantonal hunting act (kJSG, NG 841.1) of 17 January 2007 supplements federal hunting law and governs its implementation. Article 2 assigns the canton, within federal law, the hunting regale and the right of disposal over game; the canton regulates and plans hunting and provides supervision. Planning pursues four aims set out in article 3: sustainable use of huntable wild mammals and birds, regulation of huntable game on biological principles, balance between use and protection of nature through management and hunting activity, and limiting damage to forest and farm crops to a bearable level. The cantonal government is responsible for planning and in particular sets the annual hunting quotas; the office provides the necessary groundwork and hears the forestry and farming interests concerned. The hunting and fisheries division at the Amt für Justiz issues the necessary authorisations and licences and evaluates them each year.
