Thurgau: territory hunting since 1930
89 territories re-leased by the municipalities every eight years, with some 390 leaseholders and wardens.
Thurgau covers 863 square kilometres, about 25 % of it forest, and has practised territory hunting since 1930. The canton's current 89 hunting territories — two of them exclusively for water hunting — are re-leased every eight years by the municipalities. They involve roughly 390 leaseholders and game wardens. The lease figures are public: the average territory covers 958 hectares, 221 of them forest, and costs about 6,800 francs a year today, or 31 francs per hectare of forest. Of the roughly 608,000 francs in total annual lease income, one third goes to the municipalities and two thirds to the canton. The cantonal page still describes the lease period that opened on 1 April 2018 and ran out on 31 December 2025; the re-leasing procedure is published separately, and that is where the current period should be checked. The cantonal hunting and fisheries administration has issued the hunting cards itself since 2011.
