Alpine ibex: special federal status
Alpine ibex is not a huntable species under Art. 5 of the Hunting Act; it is protected by default, subject to a special cantonal regulation regime requiring federal approval.
The Alpine ibex (Capra ibex) is not included in the list of huntable species under Art. 5 para. 1 of the Federal Hunting Act (SR 922.0). It therefore falls by default under the protected species covered by Art. 7 para. 1 of the Act. The law does, however, provide for a special regime under Art. 7a: cantons may, with the prior consent of the Federal Office for the Environment, provide for population regulation of ibex during the period from 1 August to 30 November, to protect habitats, preserve species diversity or prevent damage or danger to humans where it appears that reasonable protective measures will not be sufficient. This regulation remains distinct from ordinary hunting under Art. 5 of the Hunting Act: its precise terms, cull numbers and affected zones are set canton by canton, in agreement with the federal authority, and should be verified with the relevant cantonal service.
