Seasons set species by species, and region by region
The King names the huntable species and the time frame; the directorate sets each species’ season and the areas.
Article 9 splits the decision in two. The King determines which species may be hunted and within what time frames hunting may take place. The directorate then sets the hunting season for each species and the areas in which hunting may occur. The act expressly allows a variable geometry: different hunting seasons may be set for different parts of the country. A season may also cover a particular time of day or week, and may differ between male and female, and between older and younger individuals of the species concerned. The directorate may also set culling quotas. For a visiting hunter the practical consequence is that a Norwegian date never stands alone: it applies to a species, an age or sex class, a region and sometimes a time of day — the decision in force for the target area is what counts.
