Glarus: an act passed by the Landsgemeinde

Hunting is by licence; the cantonal act was enacted by the Landsgemeinde of 6 May 1979.

The Glarus act on hunting and the protection of wild mammals and birds (Kantonales Jagdgesetz, GS VI E/211/1) carries an unusual note: it was enacted by the Landsgemeinde on 6 May 1979. Article 2 sets the regime: hunting is practised under the licence system, and the right to hunt is acquired by taking out the licence, issued by the cantonal hunting authority. Article 3 lists the canton's tasks: regulating and planning the hunt under article 3(1) of the federal act and overseeing hunting affairs; hunting administration, hunting police and the organisation of the game wardens; maintaining a healthy game population; conserving protected game and bird species; conserving, protecting and improving the habitat of wild animals. The canton must also ensure the game population stays at a level bearable for farming and forestry; damage to the forest must not endanger regeneration with site-appropriate tree species. The government may at any time order or authorise measures against individual animals causing significant damage.
